Hugh Sutherland

On August 9, 2015 we lost a dear husband, father and father-in-law. Hugh Sutherland passed away in Powell River General Hospital at age 91.

He will be sadly missed by Beryl, his loving wife of 63 years, his son Bill (Rob), daughter Cheryl (Don), family in the UK, including his sister Margaret in Scotland, sister-in-law Barbara and brother-in-law Alan in England.

He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 15, 1924. He loved the sea and trained to become a marine engineer, serving in the Merchant Navy, including time during the Second World War. He then worked ashore in Scotland and England. He brought his family to Canada in 1967, working at various jobs before settling in Powell River in 1968, after taking a position at MacMillan Bloedel where he worked until his retirement at age 65.

He was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion. His passions included motorbikes and music; he loved playing the piano and was also known to pick up the guitar and play the harmonica. His soft side was evident in his love of nature as he enjoyed all animals, especially songbirds.

He maintained his sense of humour and willingness to help his family for as long as he could, still pitching in to help with a building project or chopping firewood well into his 80th year. The typical Scotsman, he was proud and stubborn. One of his favorite songs was “I Did it My Way,” and he sure did, right up until the end.

Dad, we hope you’re enjoying a Guinness in Heaven.

“I love you Hugh and I will miss you, thanks for looking after me well. Rest in Peace”… Love Beryl.

Our family would like to thank the ambulance crew, the nurses and staff of the emergency room, intensive care unit and MSP wards at the hospital, and doctors Delport, Strydom, Ricketson, Lynskey, Takhar and Burns for their outstanding care.

There will be no service. Donations can be made to the Powell River Hospital Foundation if desired.
