John Charles “Buddy” Bird

John passed away peacefully October 31, 2015 in North Vancouver at the age of 80 years. He is lovingly remembered by his niece Wendy (Wendall) Bird, nephew Cary (Penny) Bird and their children Cary, Randy, Jacqui, Tracy and Scott, niece Lynne Bird and her children Jesse and Paige, and by his many dear friends on the North Shore and Powell River.

Roderic Wallace Fairweather
November 13, 1950 -  November 11, 2015

Rod was born in Victoria, BC, the son of Elsie (Wallace) and Tom Fairweather. In 1951, Tom, Elsie and Rod’s sister Pam moved to Powell River because Tom had been asked to open the territory for the Electrolux company. Within a few years, Jackie and Jill had been born and the family opened Fairweather’s Grocery on Joyce Avenue in Westview. They settled into their new house on Hammond Street and became active members of the local community. Rod took pleasure in his membership in school band, hockey and sea cadets.

Rod attended British Columbia Institute of Technology and became a businessman, living mostly on Vancouver Island. He owned North Island Chrome in Campbell River for many years. It was in Campbell River that Rod lived with his family. He was very committed to community involvement, especially in supporting the activities of his boys.

Rod died in Campbell River Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents. Surviving him are his three sons Connor, Cameron and Kyle and their mother Debbie Snow. Also missing Rod are his sisters Jill, Jackie and Pam and his many family and friends. A celebration of Rod’s life will be held in 2016.
 

Lori Dawn Hansen

Lori passed away November 19 at age 50. She is survived by her husband Hans, sons Daniel and Jonathon and nephew Kaij, all of Powell River.

Lori is also survived by her mother Alexis, sisters Loni and Shannon and brother Lane. She was predeceased by her father Bob and son Wesley.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 28, at 2 pm at Town Centre Hotel.
 

Doreen Elizabeth Meredith

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness we announce the passing of our mother Doreen on Friday, November 20, 2015. She passed away peacefully at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie, AB, with her daughter Louise by her side.

Doreen was born on January 31, 1931, in Vancouver and moved to Powell River in 1966 where she was a teacher for many years at Cranberry Elementary School. She was a longtime resident of Powell River before moving to Alberta in January 2015 to be closer to her daughter Louise and her family.

Doreen’s personality was larger than life and she had a great sense of humour. She was a great friend to so many people and touched the hearts of those who knew her including many students that she taught over the years. While living in Powell River, Doreen was a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Club, Ladies Bridge Club and United Church Eventide ladies’ group. She was always loving, kind and had an extremely generous heart.

Doreen will be sadly missed by all of her family, friends, past colleagues and students.Although our hearts are broken we know she is at peace and has been reunited with the love of her life Chuck, or as she liked to call him “Charlie Brown.”

Doreen is survived by her daughters Joanne (John) Cummings of Plano, Texas and Louise (Dave) Heatherington of Grande Prairie; grandchildren Brandon and Meredith Cummings and Kyla and Katie Heatherington; and sisters Margaret Lewis of Vancouver, Audrey Zaharoff of New Westminster and Jacquie (Ken) Andersen of Edmonton.She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years Charles “Chuck” Meredith.

A memorial and celebration of Doreen’s life will take place in Powell River in the spring of 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, suite 200, 1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V6H 3V2, or The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC and Yukon Branch, 200-4940, Canada Way, Burnaby, BC, V5G 4K6, or to a charity of choice.

Gertrude Susan Rideout
January 17, 1935 - November 18, 2015

Gertrude passed away on November 18 in Powell River at the age of 80. She is survived by her children Bernie (Ghislaine) of Langley, Christine Tookey of Powell River, Leona (Brian) McNeilly of Courtenay, Bridget (Trevor) Hill of Victoria and George (Wendy) of Powell River. She is also survived by her six grandchildren Melissa, Candice, Jennifer, Kurtis, Gina and Justin and her sisters Lillian, Mary and Shirley.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 28, at 1 pm from Living Waters Foursquare Church. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon. Arrangements entrusted to Stubberfield Funeral Home.
 

Olive Mary Smith
March 18, 1916 - November 22, 2015

Olive was born in Whitechapel, London, England and passed away in Powell River at the age of 99 years. She is survived by her children Daryl (Doreen) of Powell River and Carolynne (Gerald) Hague of Westbank, BC, grandchildren Quentin, Nevil, Spencer, Andrea and Alan and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Charles (Chuck) in 1981 and grandson Sheldon in 2007.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm Friday, November 27, at Westview Baptist Church. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to Westview Baptist Church or a charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to Stubberfield Funeral Home.
