David ( Joe) Cummings

It is with great sadness in my heart to announce the peaceful passing of Joe Cummings on Monday, September 7 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, BC. Joe was born in Brandon, Manitoba on May 15, 1945. At the age of three his family moved and settled in Powell River, BC which he called home for over 50 years. During that time, with his perseverance, entrepreneurial drive and love for the community, he had much to be proud of.

In 1965, Joe gained distributorship of Canada Dry, then shortly after took on Coca-Cola products. He took pride in swapping out friends’ “inferior” pop with his own brands, even in their homes. It was comical.

During this time he also managed the Beach Gardens Drive-in Theatre for three seasons where at times he ran the projector and back then, this WAS a big deal.

In 1967, at the age of 22, he was recognized as the youngest alderman in Canada. During that same year he was president of the Powell River Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce), a Moose Lodge member, and on the Executive Committee (Political Affairs) with the Chamber of Commerce. His dedication to the Rotary Club for more than 20 years, including being president, will not be forgotten.

Joe will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Joelle (Terry); siblings Hank (Mary), Ernie (Doris), Barbara (Dave), Winston and Brenda (Tim), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A public celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 28 in Powell River, BC. Exact location and time to be announced.

Debra Jane (Debbie) Ravelle (née Kaufmann) ~ November 1, 1954 - September 4, 2015

The love of my life, my wife, soul mate, companion and the little woman with the biggest heart passed away peacefully at University Hospital of Northern British Columbia after ongoing health problems the past few years. Born in Vernon, she grew up in Powell River, with a stop in Nanaimo, before settling in Price George in 1994.

Debbie had a zest for life, and with her love for art, would paint anything that wasn’t moving. The artwork on the foundation of our house, and the “one stroke” flowers on numerous pots and vases attest to the fact. She loved color, and we met when she came into the paint store where I work to change the shade of pink she was painting her living room. After seeing the end result, I knew right then that this was a woman I could spend my life with, someone who defied the conventional. We were married in 1998 and had almost 17 great years together. Health problems slowed her down, but whatever life threw at her she met it head on and fought hard right to the end. She is predeceased by her mother Barbara, survived by her father Maurice, sisters Brenda (Terry), Sandy (George), brother Brent (Brenda), as well as numerous nieces and nephews across the country. She will be deeply missed by her husband Paul, plus her fourlegged “kids” Murphy, Jigger and Lucy.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, which provided a lot of support and assistance to her over the past few years, or your local chapter of an SPCA for animal care and adoption services, I know she’d greatly appreciate it.
