Anti-violence video premieres

Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast

Men speak out and hold other men accountable

Tla'Amin (Sliammon) First Nations' Evan Adams speaks out against gender violence in a video that will be shown for the first time in Powell River next week. The video will be featured at a breakfast for local community leaders and service providers to increase awareness of the role men can play in anti-violence work.

"Historically, much of this work has been done under the initiative of women's programs," said Heather Wheating, coordinator of Powell River's community-based victim services program. "Now we are actively asking men to become more involved in our work."

Guest speaker for the breakfast will be Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast, a strong supporter of anti-violence work, said Carrie Bisson, Powell River Transition House Society's outreach coordinator, and one of the organizers of the event.

Adams is one of 14 prominent BC men featured on the video, Men Speak Up: Ending Violence Together, produced by two provincial anti-violence organizations.

Transition House executive director Kathy Northrup participated on the provincial steering committee that oversaw the production of the video. "We know that most men are not violent and we are asking men to speak up on gender violence," she said. "The men who speak in this video recognize that it isn't enough to say they aren't violent toward women. They need to be holding other men accountable."

Transition House Society and Community Services Association organized the breakfast after receiving a grant for a project through Tides Canada Foundation. "We wanted to follow up on a similar breakfast we attended in Williams Lake last fall," Northrup said. "Male leaders in the community not only spoke out against gender violence, but they committed to taking direct action by continuing to speak up on this issue."

The video is being used province-wide to encourage men to be proactive in anti-violence work, Northrup said. The men featured in the video provide leadership and role modelling for other men, she added.

The breakfast session will be held from 7:30 to 9 am on Tuesday, January 13 at the Town Centre Hotel. The video will be shown at 8 am, following a speech by Simons. Reservations are available through Wheating at 604.485.6260 or svss@telus.net. There is no charge for this event.
