Regional Board Briefs: November 4, 2009

Published: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 11:32 AM CST
District Lot 5490

Powell River Regional District directors voted to advise the Agricultural Land Commission that the regional district has no objection to the subdivision of an 8.4-hectare section of District Lot 5490, to the west of Padgett Road, from the remainder of the district lot, subject to the establishment of a restrictive covenant for the protection of Myrtle Creek. The motion also stated that the regional district does not support the subdivision of the remaining parcel, on the east side of Padgett Road, into eight lots, ranging from 1.1 to 1.25 hectares, as it is contrary to minimum lot sizes in the area’s official community plan.

Lest we forget

Directors approved a $100 grant to the Royal Canadian Legion, Powell River Branch 164, as a contribution toward a community wreath to be placed at the Cenotaph during Remembrance Day ceremonies, with funds to come from Electoral Areas A, B and C grant-in-aid accounts.

Film festival

Directors passed a motion to advance $3,000 from the economic development service and Electoral Area B grant-in-aid account for the Powell River Film Festival, to offset its costs to prepare for the 2010 festival. The motion also stated that the society should be advised not to rely on annual funding from the regional district because electoral area directors typically limit the number of years they will contribute to any particular event in order to give other community organizations an opportunity to access limited grant funds.

Tanker trucks

Directors voted to accept a quote from Vancouver Axle and Frame Limited to upgrade and complete National Safety Mark re-certifications on the Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department tanker trucks by increasing the gross vehicle weight, for a total of about $33,000. The motion also stated that the board authorizes the purchase of new tires to suit the new axles, if required, for an estimated cost of $600 per tire. The costs, including delivery of the vehicles to and from the Lower Mainland, are financed from the Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department reserve.

Christmas cheer

Directors endorsed a $450 grant-in-aid to the Christmas Cheer Committee, to be shared equally among Electoral Areas A, B and C.

Internet access

Directors endorsed an Electoral Area E grant for $3,000 to the Lasqueti Internet Access Society.

Palm Beach

Directors awarded a contract to Bolder Construction Ltd. to replace approximately 65 feet of the retaining wall and stairs at Palm Beach Park for $7,900.
