BREAKING NEWS – A 63-year-old Powell River man was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox to receive medical attention after apparently jumping from the mid-day Queen of Burnaby sailing from Powell River to Little River.
According to Constable Tammy Douglas, media liaison for the Comox Valley RCMP, the man appeared cold and wet but otherwise uninjured.
Deborah Marshall, director of media relations for BC Ferries, said the Queen of Burnaby was en route from Powell River to Vancouver Island when at 12:48 pm, a crew member spotted the man jumping overboard.
"At 12:49 we had one rescue boat in the water," Marshall said. "At 12:51 we had a second rescue boat in the water. By 12:56 we had the gentleman back on the Queen of Burnaby.
"We certainly want to extend our praise to the crew of the Queen of Burnaby. Having that fellow back on board in eight minutes is great."
Marshall said the ferry crews train extensively for such situations.
"Man overboard drills are one of the drills that they do and it certainly paid off today."
Marshall said apparently there was a paramedic who happened to be travelling on the ship, so the paramedic, as well as the ship's occupational first aid attendant, attended to the man while the ship was heading over to Comox.
"It's a good outcome, not such a good situation," Marshall said.
Douglas said the BC Ferries employees did a remarkable job in their quick action in this man's rescue.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 24.
