Mother Nature owner Ron Pfister has seen ebbs and flows in interest around home gardening in his 25 years in the business, but this time he says it is here to stay.

“People here are very aware of what’s in their products and very conscious of what they want to grow,” says Ron. “They want to have control of their own food, and we can grow so much in Powell River.”

Due to increased interest in food production, Ron and his staff follow the motto of “growing with the community” by helping them with their gardening projects, no matter how big or small.

“Our goal is to show people how simple it is,” says Ron. “You don’t have to grow a giant garden if you don’t want to. Just start off with a couple of containers and see how it goes.”

Store manager Heather Claxton says in her 14 years with the locally owned and operated company she has seen it grow tremendously and she is constantly working to provide customers with innovative products.

“It’s not just that Mother Nature has changed, but so have the people of Powell River; the way they are living and spending their spare time,” says Heather. “They are trying to be healthier overall and that has made us adapt to serve our customers.”

The nursery has brought in more edibles, such as unique berry and citrus trees, and the store has expanded its pet, giftware and home decor sections, says Heather.

“We want to be the home and garden store where you can come and find cool, unique products,” she says. “Specialty items are our specialty.”

Ron says his staff supports customers, not only by giving knowledgeable advice on subjects such as gardening and pet care, but also by helping them find the right products.

“We’ve built a reputation of having knowledgeable and helpful staff, and we continually strive to improve upon that everyday,” says Ron.

With the increased interest in home gardening, Ron and Heather say that residents are more aware of their own food production.

Mother Nature has highlighted Microgreens products and displays have been set up in the store to show how easy they are to grow at home.

“Mother Nature is always growing,” says Heather, “and it wants to grow with you.”
