New Image Auto Detail offers customized cleaning packages

Detailing encompasses all forms of transport

New Image Auto Detail owner Brian Leach has seen it all. Over 29 years in the detailing business, a wide variety of vehicles and items have passed through his shop.

“We service cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, planes, fire trucks and recreational vehicles,” says Leach. “I’ve even polished a brand new silver serving tray with a scuff mark for a kitchenware business, and garage doors with scratches; we offer a mobile service for things like that.”

To keep vehicles in their best condition, Leach recommends the “complete” cleaning program, where a vehicle is fully detailed once or twice per year and, based on the chosen program, brought in every month or two for regular vacuuming and cleaning.

“We also do last-minute emergency cleanups for interior spills, whether it’s from coffee, pop or someone getting sick,” says Leach. “Unless someone really enjoys cleaning their own vehicle, it’s not worth the time; we are set up to do it more efficiently.”

Items damaged in fires and floods can also be polished and restored, and mould and mildew issues are dealt with as well.

“Our area’s damp climate and water leaks cause mildew and mould issues with vehicles and boats,” says Leach. “We have the skills, products and equipment to fix these issues quickly before further damage is done.”

Detail technicians Ryan Hallgarth and Rob Shatford are part of an experienced and professional staff who assess detailing needs for each job and customize packages to suit customer requirements.

“Ryan and Rob are very knowledgeable and integral to the business,” says Leach. “We could not run it without them.”

The professional setup offered at New Image is important, says Leach, to give customers peace of mind that their vehicles are safe and in good hands while in for service.

“If you take them to a location off-site, in someone’s backyard for instance, they might not be covered if something happens,” explains Leach. “We have proper insurance coverage.”

Leach, who is originally from Ontario, stumbled upon the auto-detailing field after a chance meeting with the sales manager of Wildwood Motors in 1989, which led to a short-term position expected to last only a few months.

“Four years later, we left and opened our first detail shop in Vancouver,” says Leach.

Along with his wife Shannon, who grew up in Powell River and takes care of the office administration, Leach eventually opened a five-bay shop in Maple Ridge.

“We were there for three years before returning to Powell River,” says Leach.

In addition to washing, waxing and vacuuming, New Image provides services for headlight restoration, small dent and scratch repair and rocker guarding undercarriages. Cleaning and disinfecting engines due to rodent infiltration has also become a regular task for detailers.

“Three to five vehicles a day were coming in last year because of the issue,” explains Leach. “Rodents chew wires and build nests, which will vapourize on the hot part of the engine and enter the vehicle through the air filter.”

Leach says the shop also provides services such as seat and paint repair or re-dying.

Vehicle owners looking to sell may benefit financially from services that can positively affect the sale.

“We can increase the value dramatically,” says Leach. “It’s what we do.”

New Image Auto Detail opened at its current location at 6984 Alberni Street in May of 2000.

“We have really enjoyed our last 17 years providing detailing services to the Powell River community,” says Leach, “and we look forward to continuing to take care of the details for customers.”
