A new year brings new opportunities and a fresh start for everyone. For Peter Bordignon and Gary Slootweg, the early stages of 2017 also included a new business endeavour. Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning officially opened January 3.

With 35 years of combined experience in the industry, Peter, a journeyman HVAC and refrigeration technician and gas fitter, and Gary, a ticketed gas fitter, offer area residents a new option for all their heating and cooling needs.

“We’re the new best choice for heating and air conditioning in town,” says Gary, who also has vast experience as a sheet-metal installer. “We have everything a business or homeowner needs, and certified, trained technicians doing the job right.”

Born and raised in Powell River, Gary owned and operated Powell River Carpet Cleaning and Heating Services, Slootweg Brothers and Cranberry Sheet Metal, prior to joining forces with Peter.

Although the business name is new, customers can expect the same honest and reliable service Gary and Peter have become known for over the years.

“We want to continue helping people, but with our own company and with great service and honest pricing,” explains Peter, who moved to Powell River from New Westminster three years ago with his wife and two young children; eight months ago, the couple welcomed a third child.

The new company services and installs gas furnaces, heat pumps, fireplaces and heat recovery ventilators. Mini-split (ductless heat pumps) are also available. According to Peter, the wall-mounted units are becoming very popular.

“Instead of requiring duct work, you have a unit mounted on your wall connecting to an outdoor heat pump,” he says. “Installed and sized correctly, they work great in almost any home. Compared to baseboards or electric furnaces, mini-splits save money on your hydro bill.”

For customers interested in upgrades and looking for an evaluation of their current heating system, onsite visits and quotes are available free of charge.

“We go to homes or businesses and talk to clients about what they want and inform them of options relevant to their needs,” says Peter. “Each situation is assessed and we determine what is best for our client.”

Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning also provides options for water heaters. In addition to regular hot water tanks, the company also installs and services Rinnai on-demand systems.

“You get as much hot water as you want; you never run out,” says Gary. “They save a lot of space, too. Instead of a big tank in the corner, there is a small box on the wall.”

Other products the business sells and services, but is not limited to, include Bryant, Mitsubishi and Daikin heating and cooling systems and Napoleon gas fireplaces.

Propane appliances can also be installed and fully serviced.

“We work on any make or model and provide maintenance for all different HVAC systems in older homes or for new residential construction,” says Peter. “Our company is fully certified, bonded and insured, and we provide 24-hour emergency service.”

Full service is available for commercial businesses as well.

“We also work with contractors around town,” says Gary. “If they’re building a house and need an HVAC system, we do all of the work associated with it, from furnaces and duct systems to heat pumps or fireplaces, and much more.”

All customers are informed of the latest rebates available with their new investments and provided with information on how to access them. For individuals without internet access, assistance in filling out the appropriate paperwork is offered.

“At the moment, Fortis has a $1,000 grant available for switching from an oil furnace to a high-efficient gas furnace,” says Peter.

Other rebates, also through Fortis, include up to $1,000 for replacing old water heaters with natural gas models and $300 for a qualifying natural gas fireplace.
BC Hydro offers an $800 rebate program for ductless heat pumps.
