City of Powell River hosts Canada Day event

Community recognizes nation’s 150th anniversary

A Canada Day event at Willingdon Beach on Saturday afternoon will feature entertainment on the Rotary Pavilion stage, special events, games and more.

Powell River’s Canada Day celebration on Saturday, July 1, at Willingdon Beach, with its Canada 150 theme, will provide a variety of fun and a ceremony for the whole community.

“It’s a really big family event,” said City of Powell River manager of recreation Neil Pukesh. “We want families to come out and celebrate Canada Day 150 on July 1.”

This year’s entertainment and activity at the beach will be reflective of the nation’s 150 years of confederation.

“There will be lots of live entertainment and a variety of food vendors and craft vendors,” said community recreation program coordinator Alex Craig. “People attending at the park can go around and participate in many activities at the beach.”

Craig said there will be a giant cake at the park, sponsored by Safeway, the singing of “O Canada” and other Canada Day activities, games and displays.

The second annual Canada Day fishing derby will award a $1,000 prize for the largest salmon, plus a two-foot, custom-carved trophy engraved with the winner's name and displayed at Powell River Recreation Complex.

Other derby prizes will be awarded and registration is through the complex. Weigh-in for the fishing derby will take place onstage to conclude Canada Day festivities.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 is also planning a short fun run before Canada Day festivities start. Anyone can participate in the free run, which begins at 11:30 am. Registration is in advance through the Legion or at Loggers Memorial Bowl before the run. Running costumes from any era of the past 150 years are encouraged and prizes for best costume will be awarded in different age categories.

In addition to the special events, entertainment on the Rotary Pavilion stage will begin at 1 pm. Craig says organizers are aiming to make Canada Day festivities more interactive this year with more activities.

“We are looking at having booths and stations where people can do some really creative things, such as creating a large mural,” says Craig. “We are trying to create more fun and reasons for people to stay.”
