Reports on snow day
Snowfall in February resulted in the first snow day to be called in 21 years for the school district, reported Powell River Board of Education chair Doug Skinner at the board’s Tuesday, February 21, meeting. The last day that classes were cancelled due to snow was in 1996.

Outdoor program update
Outdoor Learning Centre’s (OLC) lease in Haywire Bay Regional Park has more than doubled the useable areas that will allow for additional environmental education programs, activities and team-building courses, such as those offered by Coast Mountain Academy and Jade Coast Program, according to a board of education report. In addition to school district programs that use the OLC, there has been solid growth for non-school time and international programs, as well as private bookings and programs. OLC was closed in January, then snow in February forced cancellation or delay in scheduling a number of programming days.

Trustees campaign for education
With 70 days until the BC election, the BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA) has identified 10 key actions to spotlight the importance of public education in the province, according to report to the board. Education board member Ashley Hull represents the Powell River district on the BCSTA and recently attended the first provincial council meeting of 2017 in Vancouver. Hull reported that the message from the meeting was the need to invest in educators and students.
