Take a Peak: Ben Wayne Kyle

Musician contemplates future options
Ben Wayne Kyle

Ben Wayne Kyle’s life is somewhat of a contradiction right now. The 19-year-old just finished work on a movie set and the producers of that film want him to do up a demo track. He is also engineering Lukah Bouchard’s album, has another album waiting to engineer, and is playing gigs.

Where are you in your life?
I’m in such a transition stage right now. I’m in a place right now where I could just say I’m going to move to a different city and live a completely different life, which is tempting sometimes. I want to go travelling but I don’t know where.

Can you pick one?
The main thing would be touring with Lukah’s album. But we still need to come out with the album, see if people like it, send it to industry people and do festivals.

Would you say your life is in a state of flux?
I’ve been feeling a lot of anxiety and I’m not an anxious person at all. I’m just kind of a go-with-the-flow kind of person. Maybe anxious is the wrong way to describe it. I just feel like I don’t know what to with myself a lot of the time.

Do you like it on the sound engineers’ side of the studio glass?
Yes. It’s similar to playing an instrument but you’re playing all the instruments and you’re the man pointing the finger. The thing about being in a band is you’re not just making something for you; it’s all of you together. You’re making something bigger than yourself. Being the producer and engineer of that you get to make the decisions.

How is it working with Lukah on the album?
He pretty much gives me free reign. I play the songs and he says, “They’re good.” He does come in and listen to make changes, such as “I think my voice is a little too loud here,” or, “Can you turn down the guitar in that one spot?” But where do you start? It’s his album.
