Approves invasive-species plan City of Powell River council approved an Integrated Pest Management System at its meeting on Thursday, February 15.

City of Powell River council approved an Integrated Pest Management System at its meeting on Thursday, February 15. Under the program, the first step in dealing with a noxious weed problem on public property will be to use non-toxic or least-toxic pesticides. Council also approved $15,000 in funding for implementation of a coordinated approach with Powell River Regional District’s invasive plant management strategy in dealing with noxious and invasive weeds and plants.

Approves hall of fame committee
Plans for a Powell River Sports Hall of Fame moved forward with council approving an operating budget every four years of $2,000 for a select advisory committee. The committee will be comprised of members from sports organizations, government and the community with the goal of establishing a hall of fame in Powell River Recreation Complex.

Supports neighbourhood wildfire mitigation
Council endorsed an application through Union of BC Municipalities for funding the 2018 FireSmart Planning and Activities Program. FireSmart is an education and awareness program for property owners dealing with wild land urban interface fires. Powell River Regional District would take on overall management of the program.

Appoints library representative
Council approved the appointment of councillor Rob Southcott to continue as the municipal representative on Powell River Public Library board of trustees. Southcott is one of 13 members of the library board.
