Council briefs: Awards trunk main replacement; Approves closing airport dump

Murphy Pipeline Contractors has been awarded an approximately $3.1-million contract to replace City of Powell River’s trunk water main, the pipe that supplies water to the city’s reservoir in Cranberry. Federal and provincial governments will pay 83 per cent of the project cost and the city will pick up the remaining 17 per cent, a cost estimated at just over $700,000. Construction is expected to begin later in June. According to Murphy’s bid, the company plans to insert a fused plastic pipe inside the existing concrete main.

Approves closing airport dump
At its meeting on Thursday, June 15, City of Powell River council approved a $671,479 grant application to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund for the partial closure of a solid-waste landfill at Powell River Airport. If granted, the funds will go toward paying for the partial closure of the landfill located at the eastern end of the airport’s runway. The city plans to lengthen the current runway to allow for larger capacity planes to land and take off.

Sponsors carving competition
Council approved spending $6,500 from its arts and culture reserve fund to sponsor the upcoming carving competition at Powell River Logger Sports. The city will have its choice of three of the 12 carvings produced during the contest.

Approves restaurant upgrades
Council approved a development permit for renovations to the exterior of the McDonald’s fast-food restaurant, including landscaping and signage on the building located at Crossroads Village Shopping Centre.
