Housing project goes ahead

Of the close to 2,900 new affordable rental units the BC government committed to creating over the next two years, 27 will be in Powell River.

Premier Christy Clark and minister responsible for housing Rich Coleman made an announcement Tuesday, November 22, that included a Powell River housing project. The 27-unit project spearheaded by Inclusion Powell River is targeted for low-income individuals with disabilities.

Inclusion had planned to locate the development on Duncan Street, but is now looking to swap that parcel for one that City of Powell River owns on Ontario Avenue, where zoning is more suitable. BC Housing is expected to be in Powell River in the coming weeks to negotiate with the city for the exchange.

Orca sets sail

BC Ferries’ replacement for Queen of Burnaby is on the way to its new home.

Salish Orca departed Gdańsk, Poland on Tuesday, November 22. The 10,440-nautical-mile journey is expected to take between 45 and 55 days, depending on weather conditions crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

Salish Orca is expected to go into service between Powell River and Comox in spring 2017.
