Quick Peak: Storm warnings

Environment and Climate Change Canada is notifying residents across the South Coast to prepare for severe weather events estimated to begin late in the day on Wednesday, October 12, and continue through Sunday, October 16.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is notifying residents across the South Coast to prepare for severe weather events estimated to begin late in the day on Wednesday, October 12, and continue through Sunday, October 16.

A series of intense storms is expected to deliver prolonged heavy rain and strong winds, according to media release.
Possible weather event impacts include potential for tree damage, power outages, flooding and landslides.

The first storm is expected to reach the South Coast late Wednesday evening and spread the first round of heavy rain and strong southeast winds. Winds will likely exceed the greater than 80 kilometres per hour warning criteria for the west side of Vancouver Island.

A second round of strong winds and heavy rain is expected to begin late Thursday with the arrival of the second storm.

The third and potentially most vigorous storm is expected on Saturday, when the remnants of Typhoon Songda approach the South Coast. This slow-moving storm will produce heavy rain through to Sunday.

Forecasts are suggesting the possibility for Saturday’s weather to intensify into a major storm. If the forecast holds, widespread damage from extreme winds is likely. The release also stated that since Saturday’s storm is three days away, there is still time for the forecast to change and that forecast certainty will increase with time as the storms approach.

Daily rainfall amounts during the five-day period are expected to be in the 50 to 80 millimetre range. Total rainfall amounts from the three storms could be in excess of 200 millimetres along coastal sections.

Environment Canada recommends residents prepare for potential power outages, ensure culverts and storm drains are free of debris and monitor forecasts and alerts for updates.
