Quick Peak: That Sugar Vault licence extension

City of Powell River staff have conceded to allow liquor be served until midnight once a month at special events held at dessert lounge That Sugar Vault.

City of Powell River staff have conceded to allow liquor be served until midnight once a month at special events held at dessert lounge That Sugar Vault.

Dessert lounge owner Amy Sharp is currently proceeding with an application to the BC Liquor Control Board to grant a full liquor licence, but in the meantime has been organizing special events and applying for one-off special occasion liquor (SOL) licences to serve drinks.

City director of planning Thomas Knight has the delegated authority to set the hours of liquor service for SOL licences at 10 pm, a restriction Sharp appealed last week.

Sharp said she met with Knight and building inspector Graeme Stewart on Wednesday, July 13, for a compromise. She added that she had hoped she would be allowed two midnight closings per month, but said that this is a step in the right direction. The amended restriction was granted on Thursday, July 14.

“I would like to have the opportunity to do what all the other SOL events do, which is to be able to serve until midnight or 1 am,” said Sharp. “I’m happy I was able to get one event, but I would definitely like to have more.”

That Sugar Vault hosted a summer hip-hop party on Friday, July 15, that served until midnight and went smoothly, said Sharp.
