Powell River Regional District committee of the whole recommended at its meeting on Thursday, April 20, that the board proceed with forming a heritage/museum service exploration working group comprised of electoral area directors, excluding those from Texada and Lasqueti islands, and the board’s two City of Powell River directors. Electoral Area C director Colin Palmer said he was interested in looking at the idea, adding that three quarters of the regional district’s general grant-in-aid funds are being allocated each year to organizations, such as Powell River Historical Museum and Archives, that should be supported by a funding service.

Recommends Haywire Bay project approval
Committee of the whole recommended that the regional board approve School District 47’s plan for construction of a new entrance gate to Powell Lake Outdoor Learning Centre, located inside Haywire Bay Regional Park. The school district also plans to develop and build an interpretive loop trail along the perimeter of the property that will provide educational opportunities for the study of coastal ecosystems.

Hosts regional convention
Powell River Regional District and City of Powell River will host the 2019 convention of the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities, a regional advocacy group that operates under the umbrella of Union of BC Municipalities. The regional board and city council made a joint application to host the annual conference, which will be held April 12 to 14, 2019.

Hears garbage plan update
Committee of the whole heard an update on the development of the regional district’s solid-waste management plan. A draft of the document is expected next month with broad community consultation planned. The plan needs to be submitted to BC Ministry of Environment this summer.

Recommends support for hospice society
Committee of the whole approved a recommendation to the regional board that it provide a grant-in-aid of $2,412 to Powell River Hospice Society, paid from grant-in-aid budgets of electoral areas A, B and C. The non-profit society, established in 2015, is currently developing a long-range fundraising strategy to meet its $28,000 annual operating budget. Last year its 40 volunteers supported 32 people in palliative and bereavement care.

Recommends Texada financial assistance
Committee of the whole recommended to the regional board that it provide a $1,000 grant-in-aid to Texada Island Community Society from the Electoral Area D grant-in-aid budget to support Texada Island Sandcastle Weekend activities. The committee also recommended that the board provide $7,200 grant-in-aid funding, from the same electoral area budget, to Royal Canadian Legion Texada Branch 232 to offset a portion of the Legion’s 2017 property taxes and repair its dish sanitizer.
