More teams competing and more athletes participating led to a fantastic year for Brooks Secondary School Thunderbirds sports teams, according to the school’s athletic director Tony Rice.

Rice said several team and individual efforts highlighted the season, but some stood out for him, including three provincial medal performances.

“Senior girls volleyball winning bronze, the junior boys cross-country team winning bronze provincially,” said Rice, “and then Chris Fisher’s 3,000-metre steeplechase was also a bronze-medal finish.”

Rice said it is a positive sign whenever a team from the school does well at a junior-level island championship event because they compete against students from every school in the region.

With strong showings by junior athletes over the past year, returning team members and individuals representing the school are poised for greater success next year, he added.

Rice said school programs would not be possible without community involvement.

“We owe our coaches and sponsors a huge thank you this year,” he said.

The season’s biggest highlight, according to Rice, was not how teams finished, but how many students turned out for school sports due to seeing their peers involved in competitive programs.

“When kids see quality programs and they see it’s beneficial, enjoyable and fun,” he said, “then they want to sign up for it.”
