Winning streaks are difficult to extend. Powell River Kings hit seven wins in a row by opening a three-game road trip on Friday, October 7, with a 5-3 win in Port Alberni.

After that, the short, but hot streak came to an end, as did rookie forward Cam Donaldson’s point streak. He scored twice in that game, extending his personal streak to eight goals and one assist over five games.

Donaldson did not find the net or add any more assists for the remainder of the trip, nor could the Kings power play. Saturday, October 8, Kings lost 4-2 in Nanaimo and then dropped a 5-2 decision to BC Hockey League Island Division leaders Cowichan Valley on Sunday, October 9.

“Having seven in a row, we went in and were a little too cool for school with a win on Friday in Alberni,” said Kings head coach Kent Lewis. “The takeaways from the two losses were special teams. Our power play was the difference; against Nanaimo, they went two for three and we went zero for five, and we went zero for four on Sunday.”

Kings are in third place in the standings, with 14 points, while Cowichan and Victoria are tied for first with 16 points apiece.

Brain Wilson was in goal for games one and two on the road and Mitch Adamyk played the third game. At 2.56, Adamyk’s goals-against average is sixth best in the league. Wilson is number 12 with a 3.01 average.

“Our goaltending has been good,” said Lewis. “Our forward lines have been really consistent. Liam Lawson and his line had two goals on Saturday in Nanaimo. Coming into the weekend, Cam Donaldson had been on fire.”

Last week, Kings acquired 18-year-old defenceman Callum Volpe from the Vernon Vipers. Volpe has picked up two assists in four games played with the Kings.

The schedule does not get any easier for the Kings, with three games in three nights on a long road trip starting Friday, October 14, in Coquitlam. Kings play in Merritt the following night and wrap up the trip in Prince George on Sunday, October 16.
