Figure skater achieves gold

Powell River figure skater Emma Piniewski, 16, recently passed her gold-level interpretive test with Powell River Skating Club. It is the first gold test completed in Powell River in a number of years, according to the club’s new president CaroleAnn Leishman.

Gold tests are the highest achievements in each category in figure skating. The interpretive test is judged on theme, motivation, design, dynamics, gesture, style and composition.

The interpretive program provides an avenue where skaters can develop their ability to interpret music.

Brooks to host provincial championship

Brooks Secondary School will host the 2018 BC Girls Volleyball AAA Championships in December. The event will feature 16 teams, including Brooks, which has never won the AAA title.
Thunderbirds last made the finals in 2016, when the girls’ team took home the bronze medal. It has been 20 years since a provincial girls volleyball tournament was awarded to Brooks.

Villa players make all-star team

Powell River Villa soccer club players Jake Kenmuir and Nick Van't Schip were recently selected as Vancouver Island Soccer League Division 3 all-stars.
The pair started in the annual all-star game against Division 2 players on January 6. Division 2 won in an upset 3-0.
