Track meet

Brooks Secondary School’s largest ever first-year track and field team came back from the Vancouver Island championships having done “beautifully,” according to coach Graham Cocksedge.

The school sent 24 athletes to Victoria to compete in 59 events and, of those, 21 recorded personal bests.

“Overall, for the first time with a full team, Brooks placed sixth out of 51 Vancouver Island teams,” said Cocksedge. The junior boys were fourth out of 30 teams.

Notable performances were first-place showings by the grade nine girls in 4X100 relay and Chris Fisher in the 1500-metre steeplechase.

Of the 24-member team, 11 have qualified in field and running events for the BC High School Track and Field Championships on Thursday, June 2 to Saturday, June 4 in Nanaimo, BC.

Fisher, Carter Chard-Hill, Dylan Werner, Drew Sundberg, Keagen Abbott, Ella Wedel, Sydney Elliott, Olivia Hopkins, Camryn Cline, Calli-Ann Abbott and Grace Gould will compete in Nanaimo.

“We’ve got a lot of kids who are grade eight and grade nine who have another four or five years at Brooks, and looking at the smiles on their faces, I think we’ll see them again for the years to come,” said Brodie Guild, who, along with Connie Polman Tuin, Scott Glaspey, Jeff Pollitt and Cocksedge, are the teams coaches.

Summer bonspiel

It is Powell River Curling Club’s 60th year and as part of the celebrations, the club will be hosting a summer bonspiel.

“When it’s so hot in the middle of July, what better place to be than on ice?” said club manager Roger Pagani.

The bonspiel is open to 32 mixed or open teams and, according to Pagani, about 24 teams are registered for the four-day event that takes place July 21 to 24. Registration per team is $300, or $75 per person. Being a fun bonspiel, the makeup of the teams is flexible, said Pagani, and even solo curlers will likely be picked up by a team.

“We have a number of teams coming from out of town, including Vancouver Island and possibly from Alberta,” he said.
