Kelly’s Health Shop continues one-stop tradition for better living

Health shop celebrates first year in Powell River
Kelly’s Health Shop in Powell River

Kelly’s Health Shop is celebrating its first anniversary this month. To say thank you to the community for its continued support the shop will be holding a customer appreciation day on Saturday, September 15.

Shop owner/manager Nicole Rumley bought the business with her husband Dan Forrest in 2017 and changed its name to better reflect what the store has to offer. Kelly’s carries a full array of supplements and herbs, personal care products, health food, beer and wine supplies, and homeopathic items.

“My mission and vision is to educate and empower everyone to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they purchase,” says Nicole.

The shop, previously known as Kelly’s Specialty Shop, has been open for more than 40 years and been a long-standing fixture for Powell River shoppers. Kelly’s is named after original owner James Mckenzie, whose nickname was Kelly.

Rumley has worked hard to make her mark on the shop. In addition to changing the shop’s name, she also sought an update to the shop’s logo.

“The name did not reflect who we are, so it was important to have a logo that does,” explains Nicole.

Rumley asked local artists to help her design and create the logo.

“Since herbs are the basic foundation of the store’s products, I wanted to incorporate the ancient geometry of the seed of life,” she adds. “The lotus symbolizes the rebirthing and the new energy we bring to the store. The blue energy’s healing power is combined with the number-one health colour, orange, which gives happiness and enough energy to enjoy life.”

According to Rumley, the combination of the logo’s colours, blue and orange, “imparts knowledge about the meaning of a healthy soul in a healthy body,” a key concept her business is built on.

Kelly’s will celebrate its anniversary and customer appreciation day by offering a 15 per cent discount on all products in the store except for green ticket items. Between 11 am and 3 pm the public is invited to stop by and sample tea blends created by staff member Mara Jones. Jones, who joined the staff this year, is a Clinical Herbalist and Aromatherapist and an integrative sleep coach.

In addition to Jones, Registered Holistic Nutritionist Lisa Marie Bhattacharya (Whitaker) also joined this year. Rumley says she is grateful for her fantastic team, all of whom have either completed or are enrolled in the certified natural products advisor course designed and taught by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine exclusively for Canadian Health Food Association members.

The shop’s anniversary celebration coincides with Canada’s National Organic Week that runs from September 8 to 16. Kelly’s will continue to monitor the products it carries in order to better help people who are looking to take more responsibility for and improve their own health.

“We will be making some changes to our products based on the ingredients that are listed on the labels,” explains Nicole. “Staff members have researched and identified products that are higher-rated for potentially dangerous chemical ingredients. We will educate our customers and phase out the dangerous ones and replace them with better, safer products.”

Kelly’s will continue to offer mini-seminars and workshops for its customers. Customers are invited to join Paula Vasseur’s workshops: Introduction to Essential Oils from 1 to 3 pm on September 16; Prep for Cold and Flu Season with Essential Oils from 1 to 3 pm on September 30; and Make and Take Roller Bottle Wellness workshop from 6 to 8 pm on October 10. Dr. Catherine Cameron will present her Intro to Traditional Chinese Medicine from 1 to 3 pm on October 14.
