Green candidate Kim Darwin, 51, is making her second run for MLA, after finishing third in 2017 and coming within 100 votes of the Liberal candidate. It was the best showing for the Greens in Powell-River Sunshine Coast since 2005, when then-leader Adriane Carr was the candidate.
She told Coast Reporter that she’s lived her entire life on the Sunshine Coast, but not always in the riding because Lasqueti Island, where she was born and lived until the age of two, is just outside the boundary.
Darwin is an entrepreneur with a mortgage consulting business based in Sechelt who has a long history with the B.C. Greens and ran unsuccessfully for the party leadership earlier this year.
When she announced her candidacy, Darwin said her bid for the party leadership showed her the Greens were in a strong position heading into the election.
“We have quite a track record now of showing how politics can be done differently.”
Asked by Coast Reporter about the biggest change she’s noticed or biggest adjustment she’s had to make because of campaigning during the pandemic, Darwin said, “We decided not to have a campaign office and have limited door canvassing. When we have door canvassed, we adopted the use of masks, gloves and extreme caution with physical distances.”
When asked to pick a key issue she’s been hearing on the virtual doorsteps of the riding and talk about how she’d tackle it, Darwin responded:
“I would say a mismanaged forest sector, including the logging of old growth forests, and the privatization of seniors care are tied for the most passionate conversations I’ve had with voters.”
The Greens have called for a moratorium on logging in “all high risk old-growth ecosystems” and for B.C. to “begin to shift away from a for-profit care model into one that supports and prioritizes the expansion of a high-quality and accessible public seniors care system.”
