BC Volleyball Championship

2018 AAA High School Girls BC Volleyball Championship features 16 teams from around the province, including Brooks Secondary School Thunderbirds. All games are open to the public at Brooks, Westview Elementary School and Oceanview Education Centre. On Thursday, Brooks plays at its home gym at 12:05 and 3:35 pm, as 5:55 pm at Oceanview. ORCA Bus

On the Road with Children’s Activities (ORCA) Bus provides early-childhood fun and learning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm in Townsite at the corner of Arbutus Avenue and Marine Avenue. StrongStart will be on board. The bus will be at Willingdon Beach from 9:30 to 11:30 am the following day. Author Jan Steele presentation

Powell River Public Library presents Jan Steele discussing her novel Jawbreaker: Memoir of a Women’s Shelter at 2 pm on Saturday, December 1, at the library, 100-6975 Alberni Street. The local author will talk about her heartbreaking and hilarious story of facing domestic violence and working in a women’s emergency shelter in Calgary. Author Karen Southern presentation

Powell River Public Library presents Karen Southern and a talk on her book House Histories and Heritage Volume II - The Old Town at 2 pm on Saturday, December 8. Starts Friday, November 30

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2018 Nativity Exhibit Open House takes place from 1 to 7 pm on Friday, November 30, and 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, December 1, at 6952 Courtenay Street. Admission is free, everyone welcome.

Saturday, December 1

Powell River Chorus annual Christmas Concert, with guests Community Brass Ensemble conducted by Walter Martella, takes place at 7:30 pm at Evergreen Theatre. Doors open at 7 pm. Program concludes with a carol sing-along and Wassail Party with delectables. Tickets $12 in advance at Armitage Men’s Wear or from choir members, $15 at the door. 12 and under free.

Sunday, December 2

Marine Area Business Association presents the Santa Parade and Light Up Marine Avenue Christmas Decoration Contest at 3 pm. Judging for the Christmas contest takes place December 14.

Starting Monday, December 3

Town Centre Hotel hosts its 11th Annual Gingerbread House Contest December 3 to 7. Entries can be brought to the hotel between December 2 to 5.

Starts Friday, December 14

Santa Train runs from 5 to 8 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 14 to 16, at Paradise Exhibition Park, 4365 McLeod Road. Enjoy night rides under the stars surrounded by Christmas lights. Bring an unwrapped children’s toy or non-perishable food item for the Salvation Army. Bonfire, giveaways and Kiwanis concession are available at the event.

Monday, December 17

Options for Sexual Health drop-in clinic will open from 5 to 7 pm on the first and third Thursday of each month at Powell River General Hospital, 5000 Joyce Avenue. Access low-cost birth control, counselling, health screening, pap tests and more.

 

Soup Kitchen

St. Joseph's Hall hosts a soup kitchen from 12 to 1 pm every Friday. The hall is adjacent to Assumption Church on Glacier Street.

 

Sunshine Coast Cloggers

Clansman Pipe Band offers free bagpipe and drum lessons to potential band members of all ages. Student pipers buy their own practice chanter and tutor book. Reach to Recovery provides hospital and home visits to recently diagnosed breast cancer patients. Service offers one-on-one counselling with trained counsellors for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and provides information. Rotary Club of Powell River
