The biannual Celebration of Quilts, put on by Timberlane Quilters’ Guild this year, also celebrates the guild’s 30-year history. The two-day event at Dwight Hall will be the guild’s biggest ever and feature quilts of all different shapes and sizes, according to membership chair Gail Crosfield.

“The quilt guild is always excited about this event because we have more than 200 quilts on display, plus there are vendors, a lunch room and a place for the kids to interact with quilting,” says Crosfield. “There were also be raffles and door prizes to be won. It will probably be the last time we only charge $5 for this event.”

The $5 admission fee gains attendees access to a plethora of quilting styles with a decorating theme of Canadiana to help celebrate Canada 150. An onsite guild boutique features bed quilts and table toppers as well as kitchen accessories, purses, wallets, art pieces and many other gift ideas.

“Quilts are so much more than just a bed cover,” says Crosfield, “they are pictures, landscape and portrait, still life and action, and range in size from 12-by-12 inches to more than eight-by-eight feet.”

The quilt show will also feature the guild’s community quilts, which are crafted by the members to give away to local causes, such as the oncology unit at Powell River General Hospital and Powell River Child, Youth and Family Services and Powell River and Region Transition House Society’s Grace House.

Currently at 68 members, Timberlane Quilters’ Guild holds weekly stitch and sew sessions every Tuesday from 9 am-2:30 pm, meetings every first Thursday of the month and demonstration evenings every third Thursday of the month at 7 pm, as well as weekend quilting workshops, all at Cranberry Seniors Centre.

The biannual Celebration of Quilts is the guild’s flagship fundraising event, sponsored by Powell River Council for Arts and Culture, where members are able to show off their creations.

“A quilt show is a place where all the members of the guild bring out the quilts they have made and want to display,” says Crosfield. “Two years ago, we had more than 700 people at the event, including from Vancouver Island and other BC cities. We’re hoping for another huge turnout this year.”
