POLYNESIAN DREAM: Artist Julie Carlson is hosting a Hawaiian-themed dinner and dance to help raise funds for BC Children’s Hospital. Carlson was diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy and credits the hospital’s expert pediatric care for having a huge impact on her life. The event, Island Dreams, takes place at the Italian Hall May 25.

Powell River artist Julie Carlson wants the community to join her in a Polynesian paradise later this month, all in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

Island Dreams is a Hawaiian-themed dinner dance event she is organizing at the Italian Hall on Saturday, May 25. Her goal is to raise $3,500 for the hospital that has played an integral role in her own life.

Carlson, who is non-verbal and communicates by shaking her head and tapping her foot, was diagnosed at birth with a severe form cerebral palsy at the centre. She credits BC Children's Hospital, renowned for its pediatric care, for providing so much assistance to her and her family over the years.

“Julie spent a lot of time at children’s when she was a child,” said Strive Living Society outreach facilitator Samantha Lloyd. “She really feels that it’s her time to give back because they did a whole lot for her, and she’s found that it feels good to do something productive.”

The community is already stepping up to support the event in a big way, from the donation of silent auction items to volunteering to help with the party, added Lloyd. A buffet dinner will begin at 6 pm with local band Denis and the Menaces performing at 7 pm. DJ Savan will spin in-between sets.

A silent auction and balloon pop with prizes will also take place throughout the evening. Preparations for transforming the hall have been underway for months, said Lloyd.

“Julie and her staff have been working hard on making all the decorations to make the hall look like Hawaii,” she added.

Last year, Carlson organized an exhibition of her paintings and poetry. She enthusiastically conveyed that she loves planning events.

“It helps to keep her focused into a positive place,” said Lloyd. “She’s had a lot of health concerns and sometimes it’s great just to keep your mind on something positive.”

Carlson hopes some of the funds raised can go directly to children who, like her, have difficulty communicating with others, according to Lloyd.

“She hopes some of these donations can go to helping children who have that same struggle and making sure they have a little extra support while they’re at BC Children’s Hospital, to be entertained and visited with,” said Lloyd.

Island Dreams takes place Saturday, May 25, at the Italian Hall. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at Strive Living Society and River City Coffee. All proceeds go to BC Children’s Hospital.
