Powell River Home and Garden Show highlights sustainability

Popular event focuses on going green

This submission was one of the winning entries in last year’s popular Powell River Home and Garden Show Lego-building contest, which will once again be part of the event on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, at Powell River Recreation Complex.

When Kermit the Frog famously lamented “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green,” he clearly had not been to the Powell River Home and Garden Show, according to the event’s founder and president Leah Rourke.

“In 2018, it turns out it is easy being green,” says Rourke.

This year’s event will host more than 70 booths with products and services ranging from home renovation and gardening to lifestyle and kitchenwares. The popular gathering highlights local businesses and services and ways to be more environmentally friendly, says Rourke.

“This year we are putting a big focus on green design and sustainability,” she adds. “We’re really asking all of our vendors this year to showcase their products that have to do with green choices, even our lifestyle vendors. There’s something that everybody can talk about with sustainability and energy efficiency.”

Sponsor of this year’s Eat Street and local realtor Valerie Griffiths agrees.

“We need to embrace everything possible that will help preserve this beautiful place we live in,” says Griffiths. “It can be as simple as planting trees and bee-friendly plants to taking shorter showers and turning the tap off while brushing your teeth.”

Cranberry Eco Preschool will be offering a taste of its inclusive environment as sponsor for the Kidzone at the show again this year. Nestled in a field on the edge of a forest, the preschool is a huge advocate for preserving nature and provides an engaging, predominantly outdoor curriculum that encourages children’s learning through curiosity and exploration of the natural environment surrounding them. According to children who attend, the preschool is one of Kermit’s favourite places to play and learn.

Another big draw is an all-ages Lego contest, says Rourke. “There are four different categories and age groups, including one for adults and one for businesses,” she adds.

Lego creations will be on display all weekend and attendees can vote for their favourites. Admission to the show is by donation with all funds raised this year going to the Powell River Paddling For Life Dragon Boat Team.

“Your donation will also get you entered into one of two cash prizes of $500 and $250,” says Rourke.

The 2018 Powell River Home and Garden Show takes place at Hap Parker Arena in Powell River Recreation Complex on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28. Show hours are from 5 pm to 9 pm on Friday and 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday.
