Youth volunteers between the ages of 15 and 29 from across Vancouver Island and Powell River are joining together with the Youth 20/20 Can Project for a region-wide beach cleanup.

Volunteer Powell River’s youth steering committee will be participating with the Vancouver Island programs in cleaning up local beaches in each community.

On July 8, from 4 to 6 pm, youth from Powell River are taking the environmental initiative to clean up Second Beach in Powell River. Bags and gloves will be available, or participants can bring their own. If volunteers have a truck to help dispose of the garbage and recycling, or if they have any questions, they can contact Volunteer Powell River at 604.485.2132.

According to a media release, youth engagement workers from the volunteer centre will be there to help, encourage and support the youth volunteers, maintaining social distancing protocols so they can actively and safely volunteer for a cause they care about. Youth in each community over the course of this program have shown that a healthy environment is something that is very important to them, and this cleanup has been planned in response, the release stated.

Youth 20/20 Can is funded by the Government of Canada under the Canada Service Corps, which is building a national movement to build a culture of volunteer service that empowers young Canadians to make an impact. According to the release, youth gain experience and build their skills, while giving back to their community with other young Canadians.
