Programs provide assistance to Powell River area seniors

Support available for those age 65 and over seeking non-medical help

Powell River’s regional emergency operations centre is reminding residents aged 65 and older that accessing non-medical assistance is one phone call away through the safe seniors, strong communities program.

According to a media release from the emergency operations centre, this service is available to all seniors living in Tla’amin Nation, City of Powell River and qathet Regional District. Seniors aged 65 and older. Residents/citizens can request volunteer help with grocery shopping, meal preparation and prescription pickup during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the release. Further, seniors can also request to receive a check-in call by dialing 211 or filling in an online form at bc211.ca. BC211 will monitor calls and online applications for the program, from seniors wanting help and volunteers willing to help.

“BC211 provides free information and referral to a full range of confidential community, social and government services, and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” stated manager of emergency services Ryan Thoms. “The Better at Home Program administered by inclusion Powell River will match local volunteers with seniors who need a helping hand. The services provided follow all health and safety protocols and guidelines.”

The Better at Home Program is funded by the Province of British Columbia and managed through United Way of the Lower Mainland.
