PROWLS: Rescue of the week

Dunlin recovers from cat encounter at Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society
Dunlin at Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society

Extracted from a cat’s mouth in the Grief Point neighbourhood of Powell River, this member of the sandpiper family was missing its normal easy access to abundant salt water.

Now on antibiotics, this dunlin requires time to heal while the feathers on its neck and back grow in.

With its long, slightly drooping beak designed for digging bugs in both sand and tidal waters, it eats and moves non-stop in its recovery cage.

After some healing, this bird was delighted to be given a bath dish where it now soaks its dry food while attempting to recreate its home environment.

When able to fly again, this water’s edge forager will be released at Brew Bay where it will join with its mates, flying in tight swirling flocks with mechanized precision.
