Take a Peak: Jessica Thomson

Graphic designer explores several artistic avenues
Jessica Thomson

Creative pursuits came naturally to artist Jessica Thomson. Raised by artists on Texada Island, she currently works as a graphic designer and marketing specialist in her day job. Her artistic work includes painting, pottery and fibre arts. She especially enjoys mixing different mediums into her work. Thomson will soon be starting her own venture: partnering in a design agency.

What is your background?
I grew up on Texada Island and moved to Victoria after graduation to attend university. Since then I’ve moved around throughout BC and Alberta, and had a wide variety of jobs, from housekeeper to whitewater rafting photographer. I eventually found my way back to Powell River in 2016.

What kinds of art do you create?
I like to dabble in a few different areas: crocheting and felting, as well as ceramics, illustration and painting. I really enjoy exploring new artistic endeavours, and fusing different mediums.

How did you get into art?
I grew up in a very artistic household. My mother is a graphic and textile artist as well as a musician, and my father is a potter. I was lucky in that art was always encouraged and supported by my family.

Are there any artists who inspire you?
Many of my friends are artists, both visual and musical, and their work is always very inspiring to me. I am always in awe of those who put so much passion into their work.

What else do you do for work or other hobbies?
I work as a graphic designer and marketing specialist, and am soon to be partnering in a design agency in Victoria. Aside from work, I like to spend a lot of my time outdoors. I love hiking and exploring this stunning part of the world we live in. I also travel and go on adventures whenever I can. I recently went on a trip to Iceland. If you are looking for inspiration, I highly recommend it.

Where can people see your work?
I currently have a few items at Picked Collective in Ecossentials Market. My current work is also on Instagram: @jthomsoncreative.
