Desnoyers leads Canada Red to world under-17 Hockey Challenge semifinals

Elliot Desnoyers scored 4:34 into overtime, giving Canada Red a 2-1 win over the United States on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the world under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Canada Red will face Finland in the second semifinal Friday at Harbour Station in Saint John, N.B. Russia will take on Sweden in the other semi.

Matthew Maggio had a power-play goal 14:32 into the second period to tie the game 1-1 for Canada Red. Dylan Garand made 30 saves for the win.

Dylan Peterson scored for the Americans (1-2-0) and Drew Commesso stopped 32 shots.

Also, Aatu Raty, Roby Jarventie and Jesse Seppala all scored in the shootout as Finland edged Canada White 4-3.

Jake Neighbours had a pair of goals in regulation time for Canada White.

Raty struck twice in regulation time for Finland (1-1-1), and Seppala scored in the second period.

William Hallen's goal early in the third period was the eventual winner as Sweden topped Canada Black 4-2.

Zion Nybeck, Lucas Raymond and Alexander Holtz also scored for Sweden (1-1-1).

Josh Lawrence and Pier-Olivier Roy replied for Canada Black, who will play Canada White for fifth place on Friday.

Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves for his second-consecutive shutout as Russia shut out the Czech Republic 5-0.
