A consultant will undertake a detailed condition assessment as well as recommendations for phased upgrades of the Beach Grove seawall to accommodate climate change impacts.

The City of Delta is hoping to lower the risk of flooding in Beach Grove.

Council recently agreed to award an $83,566 contract for an engineering consultant to undertake an assessment of the existing seawall and come up with recommendations for upgrading it.

The work includes a detailed geotechnical, seismic, and structural assessment as well as conceptual design to accommodate climate change implications as well as address concerns such as vigorous wave action during storms and overspray, according to a report to council.

Potential solutions will be prepared after consultation with the community.

Earlier this year, the city submitted a funding application to Public Safety Canada's National Disaster Mitigation Program for the Beach Grove Seawall Assessment and Conceptual Design project and was successful in obtaining a $200,000 grant.

Having varying heights and construction standards, the seawalls in the Boundary Bay Village area are privately owned by property owners.

Most of the seawall in Beach Grove is under a right-of-way, constructed under the Fraser River Flood Protection Program, and is Delta's responsibility.
