All campfires will be banned on the Coast as of noon on Aug. 4.

As of noon on Thursday Aug. 4, campfires are banned on the southern Sunshine Coast, according to a press release issued by the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD). The statement was issued Aug. 3 on behalf of the chiefs of the five area fire departments.

Quoted in the release, SCRD manager of protective services, Matt Treit said, “We are seeing wildfires hit other parts of our Province right now and it’s hugely important that residents and visitors follow this ban to prevent the threat of wildfire on the Sunshine Coast.

“While we are hopeful that we won’t have an emergency situation on the Sunshine Coast, I want residents to know that through our emergency management program and local fire chiefs, we are prepared for wildfire with a community wildfire protection plan for the Region.”

The ban covers all fires for warmth or cooking, beach fires, burning barrels, fireworks, firecrackers and sky lanterns. It is to remain in place until Oct. 28, unless it is rescinded earlier.

The prohibition does not apply to outdoor use of gas, propane or briquette cooking stoves or portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, provided these are sanctioned for use in Canada (CSA or ULC approved), and the flame height is less than 15 centimetres.

The public can visit www.scrd.ca/fire_rescue or contact their area fire department for additional details.
