There were no injuries after a 2006 grey Porsche Cayenne caught fire in Gibsons Friday evening.
Seventeen Gibsons & District Volunteer Fire Department firefighters responded to the fire on the 500 block of Marine Drive, near Armours Beach, June 17. The fire department extinguished the fire quickly, said the department's Lt. Kirk Pleasant, incident commander of the fire.
The firefighters also prevented fuel runoff from contaminating a salmon-bearing stream, said Pleasant.
No one was in or around the Vancouver-registered car when it caught fire. "The owners of the vehicle had a couple of dogs that they were taking on a walk down to the beach," said Pleasant.
The RCMP was called "as the fire appeared to be deliberately set," said Pleasant. The call came in at 5:30 p.m., Sunshine Coast RCMP's Cst. Karen Whitby told Coast Reporter in an email.
The fire is still under investigation.
Pleasant encourages the public to call 911 when they see a fire and to stay clear where firefighters are working. "When a vehicle's on fire, it off-gasses quite a bit, so just for their safety, it's better for the public to leave a good clearance for us while we're working," said Pleasant.
