Burnaby Winter Club users have been warned about a COVID-19 case.

People who work at or visit the Burnaby Winter Club are being warned about a person with a confirmed case of COVID-19 visiting the facility on five separate dates earlier this month.

A copy of a letter from Fraser Health to users of the club, located on Canada Way, was sent to the NOW.

In it, people are warned about “possible contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 at Burnaby Winter Club.”

The dates of the visit are Feb 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, said the letter.

“This letter is to notify you that people might have been exposed to COVID-19 while at Burnaby Winter Club,” the letter says. “We have confirmed that multiple people have COVID-19. This virus is spread between people by droplets. This means you need to be close enough to be exposed to saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose, or throat of the infected person.”

Fraser Health is now trying to track down anyone who might have been exposed to the person with COVID-19 who visited the club.

“We would like your help to get this message to any others who could have been at Burnaby Winter Club during this time period and might not have received this letter,” says the letter. “Think of those who might not have access to e-mail or who might not read English well.”

The warning comes as new COVID-19 infections in B.C. surged again with 617 new cases in a 24-hour period that ended Feb. 18.

The province did not break down the new cases to say how many are actually new variants of the virus, which are said to be more infectious than the main COVID-19 virus, and potentially more deadly.

The last time B.C. recorded as many COVID-19 infections in a day was on Jan. 8, when there also 617 new infections. The last time that there were more new infections detected than there were today, was on Jan. 7, when there were 761 new cases.

In total, B.C. has now detected 75,327 cases of COVID-19 since the first case was identified on January 28, 2020. Of those, 69,602, or about 92.4%, are deemed to be recovered because they have tested negative for the virus twice.
