Camper cabin installed at Haywire Bay near Powell River

Structure offers shelter for those travelling light

A new camping option is available at Haywire Bay Regional Park. qathet Regional District recently completed its first camper cabin at the popular recreation spot.

“It can be reserved by anyone, but the main focus is people who are travelling lighter,” said regional district manager of operations services Patrick Devereaux. “Because the cabin is within 20 feet of the Sunshine Coast Trail, people walking the trail can reserve that cabin, and people travelling by bicycle who don’t have the ability to pack their own tent, even folks who don’t want to stay inside a tent but don’t have access to an RV.”

The project was approved at the regional board’s meeting on April 25, 2019, based upon a report recommending improvements to regional district parks and campgrounds, according to a regional district media release on Monday, August 26.

The project was completed on time, under budget and offers sleeping accommodation for three to four people.

“There are built-in wooden bunk beds,” said Devereaux. “A double on the bottom and more like a single on the top, and there’s a small table with a couple of chairs.”

The regional district intends to build more cabins in the future, he added.

“There are plans to build at least one [cabin] at Shelter Point as well,” added Devereaux.

Located at campsite 44, the space is available to rent for $50 per night. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the caretaker at Haywire Bay.

“It’s already been rented out,” said Devereux. “We’re hoping it fills a void that was missing in our campground.”
