City of Powell River Council has adopted the city’s 2019-2022 strategic plan and priorities.

At the city council meeting on Thursday, December 5, council unanimously endorsed the strategic plan and priorities, which grew out of strategic planning meetings with council and staff held on February 1 and March 1 earlier this year.

After reading the motion, councillor Rob Southcott said the strategic plan is the overarching plan for every other plan that council draws together and uses. He said it is the priority seen by this body of leadership that provides a vision for the future.

“The work that we did back in February and March is really well represented by this report,” said Southcott. “I’m personally very happy with this report.”

City chief administrative officer Russell Brewer said it was nice that the strategic plan report had a number of actions outlined that council came up with, and from the support that staff provided over those two days. He said the next step for staff is to bring forward a work plan for the next three years.

“I’m looking forward to bringing that back in January,” said Brewer. “Later, we will revisit it to make sure it makes sense and confirm whether there are tweaks that need to be done. Hopefully, we’ll do that on an annual basis.”

The new vision statement for City of Powell River is: A healthy and thriving coastal community.

The new mission statement for the city is: Provide services and leadership for our coastal community and future generations in an innovative, effective and responsible manner.

The new values statement is: We acknowledge that we reside on the lands of the Tla’amin people.

There are four strategic priorities. These include: climate change adaptation and mitigation; community health; economic resiliency; and progressive governance.
