City of Powell River electoral officer sets byelection date

Deadline for nomination papers will be mid-February

A date for the City of Powell River byelection has been set. General voting day will be Saturday, April 6, according to city clerk and chief election officer Chris Jackson.

Two nomination notices will be published and, according to Jackson, the deadline for candidates to file papers will be in mid-February.

Two people have said they will run: George Doubt and Al Drummond. Doubt’s seat on council was vacated after BC Supreme Court ruled that the October 20 election for the sixth and last seat on council be declared invalid because of voter ineligibilities.

Jackson said he hopes to see a 14 to 15 per cent voter turnout. “A byelection is a tough time getting people out for whatever reasons,” said Jackson.

Turnout for the general election was almost 50 per cent.

Advance polls will be open three days and 10 days prior to election day, and there will be mail-in ballots available.
