While the City of Powell River has been invited to bid for the 2024 and 2026 BC Summer and Winter Games, the community is not in a position to host them.

At the committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, February 18, correspondence was received from Jamey Patterson, chair of the BC Games Society, including a bid package for the games.

City chief administrative officer Russell Brewer said requirements for both the summer and winter games are such that even if the city wanted to host, Powell River likely would not be able to do so.

“The summer games require accommodations for just under 4,000 athletes, the winter games under 2,000,” said Brewer. “For facilities, for the summer games, they are looking for 244 classrooms and the winter games, 136 classrooms. Some of the facilities requirements are for sports we just don’t have.”

“Especially a ski hill,” said committee chair Jim Palm.

The committee voted to receive the letter for information.
