A popular brand of coleslaw is being recalled from the marketplace in British Columbia due to possible salmonella contamination.

Loblaw Companies Ltd. is recalling President’s Choice brand coleslaw. The brand is sold in stores across the province, as well as in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and possibly the rest of the country.

The recall was issued on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and consumers are advised to throw out recalled products or return them to the store where they were purchased. They must not consume the recalled products, and those who are unsure if they have purchased the affected product are advised to contact their retailer.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

The CFIA notes that food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.

Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications can include severe arthritis.
