In response to a recent death involving a donation bin in West Vancouver, inclusion Powell River has made the decision to remove its non-monitored clothing bins in the region until further notice, the organization stated in a press release on January 3.

Donation boxes will be removed from Alberni Street near the Jean Pike Centre in Powell River, in Lund and at Black Point Store.

Clothing bins located at Augusta Recycling, Tla’amin Nation and Texada (Gillies Bay) will remain in place and a new bin will be located inside the door of the Jean Pike Centre and the Children’s Services Building at 6831 Artaban Street. Both buildings are open from 9 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday.

“We are taking this step proactively as we have not experienced any problems to date,” stated the release.

On December 31, a 34-year-old man became trapped inside a steel donation box in what police said appeared to be "a very tragic but accidental death." It was the fifth death involving a donation bin in BC since 2015.

When the current bins can be retrofitted to ensure safety, or are fully monitored, they will be returned for individuals to recycle their clothing and support the not-for-profit society.

inclusion Powell River has been collecting and recycling clothes for the past three years and stated that it is an important fundraiser for the group.
