City of Powell River will be represented on the stakeholders’ committee for the tribal journeys 2021 being hosted by the Tla’amin Nation.

At the June 4 city council meeting, in response to a letter of invitation from Tla’amin hegus Clint Williams, council voted to send mayor Dave Formosa as a representative to the committee.

Formosa said at the council meeting that the tribal journeys are “quite an event,” where tribal groups get together, canoeing from first nation to first nation on the coast.

“We will be hosting it here,” he said.

Williams, in his letter, stated that on July 27, 2021, thousands of tribal journeys participants and spectators will arrive onto the shores of Tla’amin Nation.

“For the five days that follow, we will feast, honour and host our guests in the traditions of our peoples,” stated Williams. “Songs and dances will be shared as we potlatch in celebration of the annual ocean-going canoe journey.

“Of course, an event of this magnitude requires tremendous cooperation and support from a variety of organizations and service providers, including the City of Powell River. To assist in planning and preparation, a stakeholders’ committee is being struck. Participation will ensure key players in the region are aware of the activities and movement of the canoe families, as well as have a forum for providing their comments, expertise and experience to the tribal journeys planning team.”
