City of Powell River was recently the recipient of a $15,000 provincial grant to develop a senior’s resource guide for the community.

The guide will be created in conjunction with the city’s Active Living Guide and researched by members of Powell River Seniors Community Council, according to a media release from BC Ministry of Health. It will be produced three times per year and have a particular focus on transportation options and ensuring seniors can move around the community safely.

The funding, known as the Age-friendly Communities program, is a partnership between BC Ministry of Health and Union of British Columbia Municipalities. In September 2018, local governments and First Nations communities were invited to apply for grants and consider projects focusing on accessibility, aging well, physical activity and non-medical home supports.

"Seniors are at the heart of their communities, and it's important that they are able to age well at home so they can continue to contribute positively to their neighbourhoods," stated parliamentary secretary for seniors Anne Kang. "The impact of the age-friendly grants is great, and because of the success of the program, we have seen it grow year after year."

In 2019, a total of $729,500 in age-friendly grants is being provided to First Nations and BC communities.
