Official notification has been received that Telus does not plan to build a telecommunications tower in Lund.

At the qathet Regional District planning committee meeting on Tuesday, December 10, an email from Chad Marlatt, from Cypress Land Services, agents for Telus, was received.

The email thanked regional district Electoral Area A director Patrick Brabazon, and planning department staff members Laura Roddan and Julia Dykstra, for their assistance with this project.

“Unfortunately, Telus will no longer be proceeding with any proposed wireless infrastructure upgrade in the Lund area at this time,” stated Marlatt. “Correspondence I received from Telus has indicated that community opposition/sentiment has made it difficult to proceed. I know this will likely be disappointing news for some area residents.”

At the Thursday, November 28, regional district board meeting, Brabazon said he had heard from people in Lund who are very unhappy that Telus has pulled out and with the way the matter has been handled.

“In my research, I discovered there were at least three other sites on offer to Telus, one of which is in an industrial area,” said Brabazon. “Probably, most of the objections that were lodged by some people would not be present in the new area.

“I have established that I can get a hold of Telus directly. I don’t have to go through their land service contractor.’

Brabazon said he was going to try and get Telus to go back up there and do a proper job, surveying all of the available sites.

“I know of three and I’ll bet there’s probably more out there that would do,” said Brabazon. “I want good internet and cell phone coverage in as wide an area as we can possibly get.”
