An investigation is underway into illegal commercial fishing on the Sunshine Coast after two individuals were arrested and Fisheries and Oceans Canada officers seized a large amount of prawning gear and a 40-foot vessel.

Fisheries officers seized more than 100 prawn traps off the west coast of Nelson Island in early May after receiving numerous calls from the public.

Fisheries officer Matthew Conley said because the Crown has yet to lay charges he is not able to provide specific information about the investigation. Conley confirmed the two individuals in question are not Powell River residents.

The charge of fishing without the authority of a licence is being recommended.

City improves access

City of Powell River will improve access to a recreational vehicle sanitation dump near Powell River Airport after receiving several complaints.

The city closed its public sanitary dump station adjacent to Willingdon Beach Park at end of April due to conflicts with summer events, redirecting users to Airport Super Shine, a private pay-per-use facility beside the airport.

City superintendent of public works Murray Steer said the city has received complaints from owners of longer travel-trailers who say the grade of ground at the commercial sanitation dump does not allow for complete drainage of tanks.

Steer said the city plans to address the issue by grading the adjacent city-owned gravel lot and allowing users to park on its property while emptying their tanks.
