Alberni Valley comes back to defeat Powell River Kings

For the second consecutive Saturday, Powell River Kings fell in overtime to a team they had beaten handily the night before.

After trouncing Alberni Valley Bulldogs 7-1 on Friday, February 7, Kings squandered a 2-1 lead in the final minute on Saturday, February 8, en route to losing 3-2 in extra time. Both games took place at Hap Parker Arena in Powell River.

Devin Leduc opened the scoring for Powell River late in the first period; his 16th of the BC Hockey League season was set up by Jacob Badal and Ethan Schmunk. 46 seconds after Alberni tied the game at one midway through period two, Badal and Kings’ leading scorer Levi Glasman assisted on a power play goal by Schmunk for a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The winning goal by Bulldogs’ forward Tommy Bannister came at the 1:43 mark of overtime.

Powell River outshot Alberni 31-27. Attendance was 627.

One week ago, also at home, Powell River defeated Cowichan Valley 7-0 on Friday night, only to suffer an overtime defeat the following evening, also by a 3-2 score.

Kings play their final two road games of the 2019/2020 season this coming weekend with stops in Nanaimo on Friday, February 14, and Victoria on Saturday, February 15.

With the latest result against Alberni, Powell River has now earned at least one point in eight straight home games.

Powell River rounds out regular season play by hosting Victoria Grizzlies for a pair of games on Friday, February 21 (7 pm), and Saturday, February 22 (5 pm).
