Awards night marks end of minor hockey season

Awards were handed out recently to celebrate the success of Powell River Minor Hockey Association players, teams, coaches and volunteers.

On Wednesday, April 9, family and friends filled Evergreen Theatre and Powell River Recreation Complex for the presentation of trophies marking the end of another hockey season.

Minor hockey involves children from kindergarten through to grade 12, with house and rep teams for Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget and female divisions. Three stars are awarded to members of each team, with trophies to a select few.

Unless otherwise stated, the players’ trophies were awarded for sportsmanship, dedication and all around hockey ability plus academic achievement. The trophies were awarded as follows:

  • Dennis Clancy Memorial Trophy—spirit of the game award: Cohen Mastrodonato and Ethan Taylor.
  • Dustin Clark Memorial Trophy—junior coach of the year: Scott Mastrodonato. Powell River Regals Hockey Club donates this award in memory of novice player Dustin who died tragically in 2000 at the age of five.
  • Rick Hopper Pee Wee House Player of the Year Award: Luke Muskee.
  • Brandon Kremsater Memorial Plaque—pee week rep player of the year award: Caleb Parkhouse.
  • Brad Bombardir Bantam House Player of the Year Award: Josh Chernoff.
  • Gary Lupul Memorial Plaque—bantam rep player of the year: Jack Long.
  • Sokolowski Award—graduating midget award: Jarred Hawkins.
  • Powell River Kings Midget House Player of the Year Award: Branden Houle.
  • Don Smisko Memorial—midget rep player of the year: Nico Sansalone.
  • Harvey Small Award—senior coach of the year: Warren Behan.
  • Frank Sutton Memorial Award—volunteer of the year: Linzie Long and Angelo Porchetta.

Officials’ awards were awarded for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in officiating minor hockey games in Powell River:

  • Jack Hildebrand Plaque—rookie official of the year: Liam Schreiber and Cam McNeil.
  • Mike Fraser Plaque—junior official of the year: Austin Phillips.
  • Luke Bombardir Plaque—senior official of the year: Darryl Kramchynski.
  • Bill Dodsworth Memorial Plaque: Jodi Mastrodonato. This plaque is donated by Powell River Firefighters in honour of Bill, who was a past referee-in-chief with minor hockey and gave many hours of dedicated service.
