Braves win Charity Shield second consecutive year

Braves 5 - All-Stars 3

Boxing Day Annual Charity Shield found its way back to Sliammon for the second consecutive year, but what a game of thrills and spills. These two teams had the crowd on their toes from start to finish with goals galore.

Braves opened the scoring with Jim Timothy. All-Star halfback B. Hackett tied it up. Then Larry Louie and Alvin Wilson put the Braves ahead 3-1. Hackett got his second and T. Nailen got one to tie up the game 3-3.

The game then had to go into overtime. Up to this point it had been a great game and everyone was satisfied with the score. Everyone but the Braves, that is. They didn’t let their fans down as they scored twice in the overtime period from C. Timothy and J. Timothy and it ended with the Braves being winners once again. The All-Stars deserve a lot of credit for their exceptionally fine play.

All proceeds from the game went to the Cup of Milk fund. Presentation of the Charity Shield was made by Jim McDonald, president of the soccer association. Referee for the game was John Halliday. Estimated crowd was 225.

The game was promoted by the Powell River Senior Soccer Association and the Powell River News.

Top players for the Braves were the goalie T. August and C. Timothy; tops for the All-Stars was Wayne Drury and Bob Warman.

From a collection at the game and proceeds from the concession a total of $81.28 was added to the News’ Cup of Milk Fund.
